Eating - How and What

During your time with braces it is important to avoid all the sticky, gooey and chewy foods such as caramel, taffy and gum.  These foods can get stuck in your braces and may break or pull them loose. Crunchy foods such as nuts, chips, hard candy and ice can bend wires or break brackets.   You are also advised to avoid popcorn because the un-popped kernel is hard enough to pop off brackets and the shells of the kernels can easily get caught between teeth.

When eating apples and carrots you should always cut them into smaller pieces rather than biting into them whole, this can break or loosen your brackets. Having braces and may break or pull them loose.Having foods such as dairy, bread, meat, poultry, seafood and vegetables are smart and healthy; just make sure they’re prepared in a way that’s easy to chew. Cold, soft foods such as ice cream, yogurt, and apple sauce are great to eat if your teeth get sore.

Quick Pick Foods to Avoid

  • Gum
  • Taffy
  • Hard candy
  • Sticky candies – (caramels, Sugar Daddies, Starbursts, caramel apples, Sugar Babies, licorice, toffee, Tootsie Rolls, Now and Laters)
  • Popcorn
  • Nuts
  • Ice
  • Thick tortilla chips
  • Whole apples and carrots (cut them into pieces first)
  • Hard French bread crust and rolls
  • Corn on the cob (cut the corn off the cob before eating)
  • Thick bagels
  • Thick pizza crust
  • Large, hard pretzels
  • Chewable vitamins (hard or soft)

*When you are craving something sweet, plain chocolate candy is best as long as you brush afterwards

Rules of Thumb:

  • Nothing STICKY
  • NoTEARING THINGS with your teeth
  •  SUGAR CAN GIVE YOU PROBLEMS (best to stay away)
